Seasonal Influenza Vaccine
The seasonal influenza vaccination programme has commenced. It is recommended that individuals aged 6 months or above receive annual vaccination to develop antibodies before the winter flu peak season. The Hong Kong Government provides free or subsidised vaccination for eligible groups including those aged 50 or above, pregnant women, children, and individuals with chronic conditions. It is advisable to arrange vaccination as early as October to protect personal health..
Types of Influenza Vaccine: Injectable or Nasal spray. Vaccine Efficacy: Antibodies develop approximately two weeks after vaccination, with protection lasting around 6 months to one year. Therefore, annual vaccination is required.
- Persons aged 50 or above (calculated by year of birth)
- Aged 18-49 with intellectual/physical disability or chronic illness
- Children and adolescents aged 6 months to under 18 years
- Pregnant women (must be at least 16 weeks pregnant)

23-valent Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (23vPPV)
Persons without high risk conditions are eligible to receive one dose of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (23vPPV). Persons with high risk conditions are eligible to receive one dose of 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15), followed by one dose of 23vPPV one year after.

15-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV15)
The 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15) is a new inactivated vaccine. A vaccine preventing invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) caused by 15 Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes.
High-risk elderly persons aged 65 or above High-risk definition includes:
- History of invasive pneumococcal disease, cerebrospinal fluid leakage or cochlear implant
- Chronic cardiovascular (except hypertension without complication), lung, liver or kidney diseases
- Metabolic diseases including diabetes mellitus or obesity (Body Mass Index 30 or above)
- Immunocompromised states related to weakened immune system due to conditions such as asplenia, HIV/AIDS or cancer/steroid treatment; and
- Chronic neurological conditions that can compromise respiratory functions, the handling of respiratory secretions, increase the risk for aspiration or those who lack the ability to take care of themselves.
